Gaming dev newbie - The benefits of being a new indie solo dev

I previously posted about the challenges of being a solo indie game developer and wanted to write a short article sharing the highlights of being a solo dev. As of writing this, I'm still a new game dev, having released my first game a few months ago. I think this is a good time to write the positives of being an indie game dev. This is from a hobbyist perspective for someone who wants to make games for fun without focusing on monetization.

Develop Skills

As developing a game solo you get to experience the multiple layers of developing a video game. It has been interesting learning how to do certain tasks when using a game engine for the first time. A learning curve is natural for beginners and will improve over time when you play around and work with a game engine for a while. UI, audio, testing, and game design. Learning multiple skills allows you to see the dynamic nature of game dev. While some parts may be boring, it's worth it to see the end result.

Identify Strengths and Weaknesses

The amount of self-reflection of being a solo indie dev is not uncommon while working on a game. During the process, there will be moments to be proud of and when you hit a roadblock while developing the game. It is normal to feel that way during the development and reflect after a video game is completed. Skill sets can vary between an individual and there is no pressure when developing a video game for fun. I wrote my post mortem of my first game, I learned many lesson on the highs and lows during the process. Writing about my progress made me want to improve my skills for future projects.

The freedom

The biggest perk of being an indie game dev is the freedom to make any game without any restrictions. When you're riding solo as a dev you don't have many restrictions on the game you create. Want to create a puzzle game? A shooter? A simulation game? Good news, you can choose any option you want! I can express my creativity when working on a game. Having creative freedom is the most important priority for me. I want to create the story I want to tell. I do not want my creativity to be stfiled.
