Moving and coding - Getting physical as a developer
It is not a surprise that being a developer is a sedentary job. Physical health is just as important as mental health. I aim to get some physical activity every week and take a break from watching the screen. I managed to develop a routine and have hobbies that keep me active.
Reasons why exercise is important:
- Physical Health: Sitting for long periods at a computer can lead to various health issues, including obesity, heart disease, and musculoskeletal problems. Regular exercise can help combat these issues by promoting cardiovascular health, maintaining a healthy weight, and improving posture and flexibility.
- Energy and Productivity: Physical activity can boost energy levels and help improve productivity. A quick workout or a short walk can provide a mental reset and increase alertness, making it easier to focus on tasks and stay productive throughout the day.
- Creativity: Exercise can enhance creativity and problem-solving abilities. It provides a break from routine thinking and can spark new ideas or solutions to challenges.
- Balance: Work can be all-consuming, leading to an imbalance between work and personal life. Regular exercise can help create a sense of balance by encouraging you to step away from the computer and prioritize your health and well-being.
Motivation
The biggest challenge is finding motivation when exercising. Working out often feels like a chore for others, but fear not. A helpful tip is to develop a routine. Start small and progress with each week.
Incorporating regular exercise into a routine doesn't have to be time-consuming or strenuous. Pick a physical activity that you enjoy and take a short break.
Safety
Before starting physical activity, check with your health provider for existing health conditions. Safety is the number one priority. To prevent injuries, stretch before and after workouts. I had an injury before and it was not fun. Do physical activity at your pace to prevent injuries. It is okay to take a rest if you are not feeling well.
Getting organized
The easiest way to get started is to use a tool to keep track of progress. Fitness apps and calendars are a great tool for organizing workouts and exercise.
Short, frequent breaks for physical activity, like stretching, walking, or quick workouts, can make a significant difference. By making exercise a part of your daily or weekly routine, you can improve your physical and mental well-being.
Diet
It's tempting to eat snacks throughout the day. I need to do better by stopping eating fast food and eating out. To help curb cravings, I created a meal plan. I like to look at various recipes and make them at home.
